Day 19: 9/11/26
Genesis 19
Two angels arrive in Sodom and are met with a level of depravity so severe the men of the city surround Lot’s house demanding to abuse the visitors. Lot’s compromised position — living in Sodom, sitting at its gate, his own daughters engaged to men of the city — shows the slow cost of pitching one’s tent toward Sodom. Compromise rarely announces itself; it accumulates.
The angels physically pull Lot out — grace acting where willpower had failed. But then the instruction: don’t look back. Lot’s wife does, and becomes a pillar of salt. This is not a story about a magic trick; it’s a warning about the heart’s attachment. Jesus references her directly in Luke 17 — “Remember Lot’s wife” — as a warning about being so tied to what God is judging that even in the act of escaping it, you cannot let it go. The chapter closes darkly, showing that the trauma and distortion of Sodom followed the family even after the fire stopped.
Deliverance and freedom are not the same moment. God can pull you physically out of a destructive place in an instant, but the healing of what that place did to your heart, your family, your instincts — that is a longer walk. Don’t be surprised if you’re rescued and still carrying wreckage. Don’t look back with longing at what God is delivering you from. Keep walking forward, even if the ground behind you is burning.
Reflect:
Is there a “Sodom” you’ve been physically removed from but still glance back at? What would it look like to keep walking, even while still processing the damage of where you came from?
Prayer:
Lord, pull me out where I cannot pull myself out. And when I’m free, give me strength not to look back with longing at what You’ve delivered me from. Amen
