Devotional

The fall began with an attack on the Word and character of God. The serpent did not begin by openly commanding rebellion. He planted suspicion: Did God really say that? Is God truly good? Is He withholding something you need? Temptation still follows this pattern. Before sin captures our actions, deception often distorts our view of God. Eve saw that the forbidden fruit appeared good, desirable, and able to make her wise. Adam joined her in disobedience. Their sin was more than eating fruit; it was a declaration of independence. They chose to determine good and evil for themselves rather than trust the wisdom of their Creator.

Sin promises freedom, but produces bondage. Their eyes were opened, yet instead of becoming like God in glory, they became painfully aware of shame. Their immediate responses reveal what sin does: they covered themselves, hid from God, became afraid, and blamed others. Sin damages our relationship with God, ourselves, one another, and creation. Yet God came looking for them and asked, “Where are you?” He was not seeking information; He was calling them out of hiding and into accountability. God judged the serpent, the woman, and the man because He is holy and sin has real consequences. Nevertheless, judgment was accompanied by mercy.

Genesis 3:15 contains the first announcement of the gospel: the woman’s offspring would crush the serpent’s head, although His heel would be wounded. This points forward to Jesus Christ, who suffered on the cross yet defeated Satan, sin, and death. God also clothed Adam and Eve. Their own coverings were insufficient, so God provided what they could not provide for themselves. This anticipates the gospel: we cannot cover our guilt through excuses, religion, or good works. God Himself provides our covering through the righteousness and sacrifice of Christ.

Truth to carry today

Sin drives me into hiding, but God calls me into the light and promises victory through Jesus Christ.

Self-reflection

What lie about God’s goodness or His Word am I being tempted to believe? When I sin, do I confess honestly, or do I hide, excuse, and blame? Where do I need to receive Christ’s forgiveness instead of trying to cover myself?

Prayer

Holy Father, forgive me for every time I have doubted Your Word, questioned Your goodness, or chosen my own wisdom above Yours. Expose the lies I have believed and replace them with Your truth. Give me courage to come out of hiding, confess my sins, and accept responsibility without blaming others. Thank You for seeking sinners and for sending Jesus, the promised Savior, to defeat the enemy. I renounce every false covering and receive the forgiveness and righteousness You provide through Christ. Restore truth, purity, and fellowship with You in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
