Day 22: 9/14/26

Genesis 22

God tests Abraham, asking him to offer Isaac, the son of promise, as a burnt offering on a mountain in Moriah. Abraham tells his servants, “we will worship and then we will come back to you,” suggesting he reasoned God could even raise Isaac from the dead — resurrection faith, centuries before resurrection had been demonstrated.

At the critical moment, the angel stops Abraham’s hand, and a ram is caught in the thicket, provided in Isaac’s place. Abraham names the place Jehovah Jireh — “the LORD will provide.” This is a prophetic picture. Moriah, tradition holds, is the same mountain range where the Temple would later stand, and where, centuries after that, another Father would not withhold His only Son on a hill nearby. Isaac carried the wood up the mountain for his own sacrifice, just as Jesus carried His own cross. The ram died in Isaac’s place, just as Christ died in ours.

Whatever mountain you are climbing right now — whatever the Lord seems to be asking you to lay down that feels like it costs everything — hear this: the God who tests is also the God who provides. He does not ask you to walk up the mountain to take from you what He gave you. He asks so that you would discover, on the mountain itself, that He always intended to provide the way through. Jehovah Jireh is not a name you learn in comfort. It’s a name you learn on the climb.

What has God asked you to hold with an open hand, fully surrendered, even before you understood why? Where in your life do you need to declare “the LORD will provide” before you see the provision?

Prayer:

Jehovah Jireh, You are my provider even before I see the ram in the thicket. Give me Abraham’s obedience on the mountain, and Isaac’s trust as he climbed it. Amen.
