“The LORD said to Abram… ‘Lift up your eyes from where you are and look north and south, east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring forever.’” — Genesis 13:14-15

Devotion

Genesis 13 tells a quiet but important story about two men facing the same problem — too much livestock and too little land — and choosing very differently. When strife breaks out between Abram’s and Lot’s herdsmen, Abram, the elder and the one with the greater covenant promise, generously offers Lot first choice of the land: “Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left” (13:9).

Lot “looked up and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan was well watered” (13:10) and chose it for himself — a decision based purely on what looked most fertile and comfortable in the moment. The text quietly notes a warning sign right in the middle of his decision: “the people of Sodom were wicked and were sinning greatly against the LORD” (13:13) — Lot saw the good land but seemingly didn’t weigh the spiritual cost of the neighborhood he was choosing.

Abram, by contrast, releases his rights, trusts God with the outcome, and immediately after, God speaks to him again — expanding the promise, telling him to look in every direction because all of it would belong to his offspring. There’s a pattern here worth noticing throughout Scripture: those who release control and trust God’s provision instead of grabbing for the best portion by sight often find God meeting them with even greater promise on the other side of that surrender.

Reflection Question

Are there situations in your life right now where you’re tempted to choose based purely on what looks most comfortable or fruitful on the surface, without considering the spiritual environment it would place you in? What would it look like to trust God with the outcome the way Abram did?

Prayer

Lord, give me Abram’s spirit of generosity and trust rather than Lot’s instinct to grab the best portion by sight. Help me weigh not just what looks fertile and comfortable, but what environment will nurture my walk with You. Where I’ve released control to You, meet me with greater promise, just as You met Abram. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
