Read Genesis 37
“Come now therefore, and let us slay him… and we shall see what will become of his dreams.” – Genesis 37:20 KJV
Key thought: God’s promise may be opposed, misunderstood, and delayed, but human hostility cannot finally cancel His purpose.
Joseph received dreams that pointed toward a future authority, but the first visible result was greater hatred from his brothers. The family already carried the poison of favoritism. Jacob openly favored Joseph, Joseph wore the special garment, and jealousy grew until his brothers sold him into slavery and deceived their father.
A genuine calling does not excuse immaturity, and suffering does not automatically prove that we have done everything wisely. Yet the brothers’ betrayal was their responsibility. They tried to destroy the dream by removing the dreamer. The pit seemed like evidence that the word had failed, but it became one step on the road to Egypt.
Joseph’s story later echoes aspects of Christ: a beloved son was rejected by his own, handed over for silver, humiliated, and eventually became the means of saving those who wronged him. Joseph was not sinless and is not Jesus, but his life forms a pattern that prepares us to recognize the greater rejected and exalted Son.
The pit is not the fulfillment, but neither is it outside God’s reach. We must not call betrayal good. We can say that God remains sovereign enough to carry His purpose through what others meant to destroy.
Truth to Carry Today:
A dark chapter does not have authority to write the ending of what God has spoken.
Self Reflection
1. Have I mistaken opposition or delay for the death of God’s purpose?
2. Is favoritism, jealousy, or comparison damaging a relationship in my family?
3. How can I remain faithful without becoming proud about what I believe God has shown me?
Prayer
Father, guard me from jealousy and from pride about my calling. Heal the wounds created by favoritism and betrayal. When I find myself in a pit I did not choose, keep me from despair and bitterness. I trust that no person can overthrow Your righteous purpose. Form the character I will need before You bring the promise to fulfillment. Amen.
