Read Genesis 45
“And now be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.” – Genesis 45:5 KJV
Key thought: Forgiveness does not rename evil as good; it recognizes that God’s saving purpose is greater than the evil people intended.
Joseph could no longer restrain himself. He sent the Egyptians out and revealed his identity: “I am Joseph.” His brothers were terrified, because the brother they had harmed now possessed the power to punish them.
Joseph named their action plainly: “ye sold me hither.” Forgiveness did not require pretending the betrayal was harmless. In the same breath, he saw a greater reality: God had sent him ahead to preserve life. The brothers were responsible for their evil intention, while God sovereignly directed history toward a saving outcome. God was not the author of their sin, but their sin could not overthrow His purpose.
Joseph’s tears, embrace, and provision opened the way for the family to live. Again his story prepares us to understand Christ. Jesus was rejected by His own, yet through His suffering God provided salvation. Those who come to Him in repentance meet not a reluctant Savior, but One who welcomes, forgives, and gives life.
Forgiveness is possible when judgment is entrusted to God and our identity is no longer controlled by what was done to us. It may coexist with boundaries and a gradual rebuilding of trust, but it releases the right to personal revenge.
Truth to Carry Today:
I can tell the truth about evil and still believe that God is able to bring preserving, redemptive good from what He never called good.
Self Reflection
1. Have I mistaken forgiveness for denying what happened?
2. Where do I need to release personal revenge into God’s hands?
3. Can I see any way God has brought life or wisdom from a painful history without excusing the wrong?
Prayer
Sovereign God, You are greater than what others intended against me and greater than the harm I have caused. Teach me to name sin truthfully without allowing it to become the ruler of my future. I release vengeance to You. Through Christ, give me power to forgive, wisdom to rebuild trust appropriately, and faith to recognize Your preserving hand. Amen.
