Genesis 24

Abraham sends his servant back to his homeland to find a wife for Isaac, refusing to let Isaac marry a Canaanite woman or leave the promised land himself. The servant’s prayer at the well is a model of specific, faith-filled petition: he asks for a precise sign — that the right woman would not only offer him water but volunteer to water his ten camels too, a labor-intensive kindness that would reveal character, not just willingness. Rebekah does exactly that, before he had even finished speaking — God answering before the prayer was complete.

This whole chapter pictures a father sending a servant to secure a bride for the son, at great cost, from a distant land, based on grace and calling rather than the bride’s own initiative. Rebekah’s willingness — “I will go” — mirrors the response every soul is eventually asked to give. The chapter ends with Isaac bringing Rebekah into his mother Sarah’s tent, and finding comfort after his grief — new covenant family life continuing after old loss.

God is not too busy with the large covenant plan to care about the specific details of your life — a spouse, a direction, a provision. The servant’s prayer wasn’t vague; it was precise, and God met it precisely, before the prayer even finished. Bring God your specifics. He is not offended by detail; He delights in answering it.

Lord, thank You that You answer prayer down to the details. Give me the courage to say “I will go” the way Rebekah did, even when I can’t see the whole road ahead. Amen.
