“These are the clans of Noah’s sons, according to their lines of descent, within their nations. From these the nations spread out over the earth after the flood.” — Genesis 10:32

Devotion

Genealogies can feel easy to skim past, but Genesis 10 — often called the “Table of Nations” — carries real theological weight. It traces seventy nations descending from Noah’s three sons, and it’s essentially a map of the ancient world as the biblical writers understood it: the beginnings of the peoples, languages, and territories that would fill the rest of the biblical story, from Egypt to Assyria to Canaan to the coastlands.

Why does this matter? Because it establishes, right at the outset, that every nation on earth traces back to one common family, and every nation is within the scope of God’s story. This chapter quietly refutes any notion that God’s plan is only about one favored people group. Later, God will call one specific family — Abram’s — starting in chapter 12, but Genesis 10 makes clear that the call of Abram was never meant to bless only Abram’s descendants; it was always meant to reach all seventy nations mapped out here (echoed explicitly in Genesis 12:3, “all peoples on earth will be blessed through you”).

There’s also something worth sitting with in the reminder that humanity, even after the flood, immediately begins to multiply, spread, and diversify — filling the earth again as God intended from the very beginning in Genesis 1. Diversity of nations, languages, and peoples isn’t a flaw or an accident in the story; it’s part of God’s original design for a filled and fruitful earth, even before it becomes complicated by human pride in the very next chapter.

Reflection Question

How does knowing that God’s heart has always included every nation — not just one people — shape the way you pray for the nations, or think about your own ministry’s reach beyond your immediate circle?

Prayer

Father, thank You that Your love was never confined to one people or nation — Your heart has always been for the whole earth. Give me Your heart for the nations, and help me see my own calling not as an end in itself, but as part of Your larger purpose to bless “all peoples on earth.” Expand my vision beyond what is comfortable and familiar. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
